Wein-Plus

Clear, firm, yet relatively cool and restrained, polished bouquet with bright yellow fruity, delicately floral and distinctly planty aromas. Tart, rather tightly knit, again bright fruit, clearly planty and slightly yeasty notes, quite lively acidity, persistent on the palate, delicately smoky and clearly mineral, a lot of power, but also a certain freshness and tension, good depth, still young, chalky-salty minerality in the background, very good, firm finish with warm and cool elements. Will be able to mature for a long time.

For a late-ripening local variety (and rarity), Martin Donatsch's 2018 Completer "Malanserrebe" displays a radiant golden-yellow color and reflects the warm vintage on the nose, which comes across almost as an Ermitage (Marsanne) from the Rhine. Deep, ripe and intense yet super mineral, refined and complex on the lemon-scented and floral nose, this is a full-bodied, round and lush, very concentrated but juicy yet fine, persistently firm Malanser that reveals excellent purity and elegance with sustainable mineral freshness, salt and grippy phenolics. Powerful yet fascinating. The 2018 is a mouthful of Completer. Bottled after one year in barriques with 14.5% alcohol. Tasted in January and February 2020.

Clear, firm nose, light yeasty notes, hint of almonds, ripe, partly candied yellow deuit, floral and elegant vegetal tarces, light mineral notes in the background. Ripe, very firm, slightly off-dry fruit on the palate, lively acidity, integrated tannins provide some grip, persistent and full-bodied, light nutty oak, hint of tobacco, prominent salty, chalky mineral notes, good depth, hint of bacon, fairly prominent yeasty notes, still undeveloped, noticeable high alcohol, but quite well integrated, fliral traces, hint of red berries, clear contours, some grip on a very good, firm finish. Needs time to mature.

From calcareous schist soils and aged in barriques for one year, the 2017 Completer "Malanserrebe" displays a pure, fresh and lemon-flavored bouquet of crushed stones and ripe white fruits intermixed with yeasty layers. The palate is enormously vital, tight, fresh and mineral, yet filigreed, lean and still pretty much austere compared to the rich 2018. However, the wine is dense and reveals a long, intense and tensioned, enormously salty-vital finish. The 2017 is doubtlessly a long-distance runner. 14% alcohol. Very promising but due to spring frost, only 300 bottles were produced, which are available exclusively for friends in the domaine-owned "Zum Ochsen" restaurant. Tasted in January 2020.

The 2016 Completer Malanserrebe is pure and concentrated on the deep and mineral nose. Full-bodied, intense and rich on the palate, this is an elegant white with concentration, grip and salty-mineral tension. It is very long and tightly structured, with intense and concentrated fruit. It is still a baby but will age for many years.

From calcareous slate soils, Donatsch's 2015 Completer 'Malanserrebe' displays a clear, fresh and aromatic bouquet of canned peaches and pineapples along with some flinty terroir flavors and slightly toasty notes from the 12 months aging in barrels. This silky/creamy textured and elegant wine is full-bodied and powerful, showing a good calcareous freshness with a delicate but vivacious acidity, as well as remarkable finesse. But it should be aged for another year or two. It is a nice Burgundian style paired with the coolish, mineral fruit of Grison.

Still reserved on the nose with elegant notes of white flowers, pome fruit and quince. Very restrained, perfectly integrated spicy notes. Carried on the palate by an animating, Riesling-like game between the juicy, almost dance-like acidity and a hint of residual sweetness, which is only noticeable as a fruity melt.

The 2014 Completer is from an indigenous grape variety from Malans. Picked very late in the middle of November, but with a remarkably high acidity, this is an age-worthy white wine with a clear and nutty, also mineral-flavored bouquet. Full-bodied, fresh and firm on the palate, this is a powerful, slightly bitter or rustic wine with vitality and transparency—as well as a long and persistent, powerful finish. Still rustic, the 2014 will surely benefit from bottle aging. A real characterful, even rather rustic wine.
